Former Major League Baseball All-Star, Tim Raines was one of the first players to testify of his cocaine abuse during the Pittsburgh drug trials of 1985. Players were called before a grand jury and granted immunity in exchange for their testimonies.
Although this act allowed Raines to continue his career, it never absolved him in the eyes of the Hall of Fame induction committee, though his statistics made him a shoo-in.
A few years after the trials, Raines’ baseball cards began to feature his nickname, “Rock” and he was often photographed prominently displaying his gold chain and medallion, which bore the moniker, outside his jersey. In retrospect, this conversion seemed to epitomize his efforts to reinvent himself and start anew.
